What is Perform Guard®?
Perform Guard ® is an additive used in RMAX expanded polystyrene (EPS) to resist termite infestation in Australia. It is exclusive to RMAX and can be identified by the light grey colour.
How is Perform Guard® Made?
Perform Guard® is made using an inorganic material that is a deterrent to termites and is incorporated into the expanded polystyrene during manufacture. It is not just a surface additive, but provides fully integrated protection of the EPS for the life of the building.
Perform Guard® is not a barrier system, but should be used in conjunction with a total insect management system available from reputable pest controllers.
How safe is Perform Guard®
Perform Guard® is registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency for building applications. It has been thoroughly tested and is non-corrosive, non-toxic, and safe to handle.
Other environmental advantages include:
- Contains no harmful CFCs, HCFCs or HFCs
- Contains no formaldehyde
- Can be recycled
- It is inert, non nutritive and highly stable
- Will not decompose, decay or produce gases or leachates
- Safe for landfill
How effective is EPS with Perform Guard® as a thermal insulation material?
Extremely effective ...essentially because stabilized air is such a good insulator.
The thermal performance of a material is measured in terms of its resistance to the flow of heat. This thermal resistance is expressed in R values, the higher the number, the better the insulation.
The R value of the most commonly used Class (Class SL) is 1.13 for every 50mm thickness. Thus, 44mm of this Class of EPS delivers an R value of + 1.0.
Does Perform Guard® absorb water?
EPS with Perform Guard® is a closed cell and cannot absorb water. During the process of moulding a block, tiny channels are formed between the Perform Guard® particles. If the material is immersed in water these tiny channels can be filled with water. After immersion for more than 360 days, there may be up to 6% water content by volume, which has entered the channels.
Even under such an adverse and rare condition of prolonged saturation, Perform Guard® suffers little adverse effect. It maintains its shape, size, structure, cohesion and physical appearance. The ability of Perform Guard® to resist the adverse effects of moisture is exemplified by its widespread use in floats, marinas and other applications, which involve full or partial submergence in water for prolonged periods of time.
Does age affect the thermal performance of Perform Guard®?
No. EPS with Perform Guard® consists of 96%-99% air and 4%-1% polystyrene, and nothing else. Because of its cellular structure Perform Guard® is dimensionally stable, and will not settle over time. Perform Guard® used and installed correctly does not deteriorate with age and as such is able to deliver constant R values for the life of the building.
Is Perform Guard® strong?
Yes. EPS with Perform Guard® is manufactured in a number of classes (or densities), and each class exhibits excellent compressive and flexural strength and dimensional stability characteristics ...at a very high strength to weight ratio.
The range of classes available enables specifiers to select the most appropriate balance between structural and insulation properties for any building application.
Is Perform Guard® degraded by ultraviolet light?
Prolonged exposure to sunlight will cause a slight discolouration (yellowing) of EPS with Perform Guard® insulation and cause some surface embrittlement.
Even so, the thermal insulation properties will not be affected unless exposure results in loss of thickness of the Perform Guard® boards, although the friable surface can make bonding difficult. For this reason, Perform Guard® insulation should be covered to protect it from UV light if it is to be stored in the open for extended periods.
Is Perform Guard® durable?
Yes. Because EPS with Perform Guard® is an inert, organic material, it will not rot and is highly resistant to mildew. It also provides no nutritional value to ants, termites, or rodents.
To prevent damage to Perform Guard® by pests and insects seeking to gain access to the other materials in buildings which provide a food source, Perform Guard® may be coated with a thin cement slurry.
Provided EPS with Perform Guard® does not suffer mechanical damage or failure of any fittings that may be used, it should have a life equal to that of the building in which it is installed.
Does Perform Guard® contain CFCs?
No. EPS with Perform Guard® is chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) free.
At no stage during the manufacture or application of Perform Guard® is the use of CFCs or HCFCs, or other compounds which are said to contribute to the destruction of the earth's ozone layer, required.
